LiveAbove Event FAQ’s

What is the Youth Transition Network?
(Show Answer...)

The Youth Transition Network is a coalition of over 50 national denominations, youth, college and military ministries which have united to provide resources to our nation’s annual 1.2 million graduating Christian youth, of which 70%* walk away from their faith (temporarily or permanently) after high school (“the loss of youth issue”).

What is the LiveAbove event?
(Show Answer...)

LiveAbove is a highly interactive, internet broadcast event engineered by national youth and college ministry leaders for high school juniors and seniors to prepare them for what lies ahead in their transition out of high school. The event will cover the changes, challenges and opportunities these students will have in college. There will be a variety of topics, in short sections which include survey questions that the students will text their answers and questions to the live site to be discussed. A planned lunch break will give the host sites the chance to have local college ministry leaders and Christian collegians there for a panel discussion with the youth while they eat. All the attending students will let us know, in their registration which college they are planning on (or hoping to) attend and will be contacted after the event by the college ministry leaders at that college.

What will the LiveAbove event cover? What is the program?
(Show Answer...)

LiveAbove is a 6-hour event that is broken up into many short, highly interactive segments with a lunch break when local host sites may provide on-site content in the form of bringing in college ministry leaders and Christian college students to host a discussion panel with the students.

How will the event hold the attending students’ attention?
(Show Answer...)

LiveAbove is not a lecture conference but a fast-paced, relevant event with lots of video clips, music transitions, opportunities for small group interaction, mid-topic surveys for them to text or MSN chat their questions or answers for and a lunch break with a potential panel of ministry leaders and/or Christian college students to discuss the transition with. This is no longer than a typical school day and gives the students a lot of opportunity to discuss the topics and move around so that they won’t get bored.
What makes LiveAbove unique?
(Show Answer...)

LiveAbove is a first-of-its-kind national webcast event that gives students a real look at the changes and challenges about to hit their life, motivation to keep their faith and a way for them to connect with college ministry leaders before the students even leave home!

Most students are in denial about the culture shock that will hit them until the day they are dropped off on their college campus. We will open their eyes with current college students’ stories, recent research and prepare them for the transition not only with ideas and resources we tell them about, but most of all…

With our LiveAbove website already being populated with over 4,700 ministries on over 3,000 campuses, it is extremely unique that we have the technology in place to capture each student’s preferred contact information and send it to each of the college ministry leaders that the students want to be contacted from at the college they are planning to attend when they graduate.
What is a host site?
(Show Answer...)

Since LiveAbove is a webcast event, there will be a live studio audience of 150 students at the main filming location, but the rest of the students across the nation will be viewing the event over the internet at a location that has their computer hooked up to a projector and sound system. These local host sites will register online, state the number of seats in the room where they’ll host the event, will have a few leaders moderating the local needs of the event, provide lunch for the attendees and will either pay for their students to attend at a bulk rate discount or have the students pay their own registration online.

What do I need to have/do to be a host site?
(Show Answer...)

You need to register online and provide the below tech, volunteer and materials…

The technical needs are: a computer/laptop, high-speed DSL that your computer/laptop can be wired to (wireless connections may get dropped), projector, screen and a sound system.

Leader-wise, you need to have someone to coordinate the administrative details, someone to run the technical aspects of the event and someone to function as a local emcee to give instructions to the students.

You will need to provide seating (preferably movable chairs, which work better for the group discussions in the event), lunch for all your attendees, paper and writing utensils (for group discussion notes) and extra Bibles on hand for attendees who forget theirs (as will be asked of them).

Who is paying for the LiveAbove event?
(Show Answer...)

There are 2 different ways to work out the payment, with 2 variations each.

Site License (Closed): You pay a $75 application fee and you pay for your students at a discounted bulk rate, so they may come free. Only your students can attend, which they will do with a special code marking them as one of your already paid attendees.

Site License (Open): You pay a $75 application fee and you pay for your students at a discounted bulk rate, so they may come free, but you also allow outside students to attend, who will pay their own registration online.

NOTE: For host sites choosing the “Site License” options, you will get a code for your students to use when they register [once our online student registration area is complete (late December ‘08)]. You will receive an email once the student registration area is ready and then you’ll be able to find it once you log into your Host Site Management Area.

Student Registration (Closed): You pay a $75 application fee. Your students will pay their registration online, and only your students can attend. They will register with your location name, which will not be made available in our zip code search for outside students to see.

Student Registration (Open): You pay a $75 application fee. Your students and students from out in the community will pay their registration online, by finding your location in a zip code search and choosing you. We track the number of seats you have, so that your room will not be overbooked.

How difficult is it to host this event?
(Show Answer...)

Not difficult! We manage the whole registration process (gather all the student information and payments, track the seating so you don’t overbook). You only need to register your location, find a coordinator, emcee and tech operator (see their duties below), provide lunch and potentially gather college ministry leaders and college students for a panel (this is optional AND we will contact them for you).

The coordinator only needs to get permission to have the room and tech items available, arrange for the room and lunch setup/teardown, check in students, get paper/pencils/Bibles to students who need it and pass out/collect end-of-event surveys (to input online or mail to us).

Your emcee will have very little to do since the webcast speakers guide the attendees through what they need to do. He/She will be there to help give instructions and gather group answers for some discussions.

Your technical support person will simply log into a test broadcast the night before the event (we will contact you with when/how that is) and then make sure things are hooked up and ready to go for the webcast and stay there to help if something stops working correctly.

Should I be inviting my students and their parents?
(Show Answer...)

LiveAbove is designed for high school juniors and seniors. It is possible for parents to register and attend the event at a host site, but we don’t recommend this for a couple reasons:
1) There is a lot of student discussion built into this event and we understand that students may be hesitant to bring up honest answers if their parents are watching.
2) If the students are hesitant to be honest in these discussions, then the breakthroughs we know can occur might be hindered.

What is the ideal audience size for this event?
(Show Answer...)

We recommend that you have a group of students that is no less than 20, so that the small group break-outs have enough students to interact with. We also recommend no larger a group than 250 as it is very difficult to manage this many students breaking into small groups and getting their answers to the local event emcee.
